Kai Tiaki te Kura Tawhiti - 2024 Climbing Event Recap

“Learning through movement and guardianship”.

Gritt is built around the fundamental concept that nature facilitates and necessitates movement which then provides the perfect learning ground. It is within our directive to then ensure we preserve nature so that the next generation may have the same opportunity.

This year we introduced our first climbing event; a community climbing day focused on the integration of youth climbers into the outdoor environment of Kura Tawhiti, Castle Hill, with the goal of the event to safely facilitate youth climbers into outdoor bouldering, build a sense of community and foster a positive learning environment with the preservation of the natural environment at the centre of these goals.

We had a great group of 8 climbers covering a range of abilities come along for the day, and we were fortunate to connect them with local climbers; Alec McCallum, Erica Gatland, Matt Corbishley and Will Heeringa. We were grateful to have such a great crew come along to help us for the day and they all provided valuable insights into climbing in the area and look forward to having them along in future!

The day started bitterly cold with clouds looming above us throughout the valley which meant staying warm was vital but with energy to the brim, this wasn’t an issue for the crew! Quantum Field was our chosen playground for the morning as everyone worked together to work through sequences and motivate each other through crux moves, with even some coaches being left in the dust by the younger generation.

Between each location, the group would be sure to clean the boulders using their newly acquired water sprayers and Reach toothbrushes, the finest of tools to ensure the preservation of the boulders.

A classic kiwi sausage sizzle was necessary to refuel and by this point the cloud had burned off and the day began to heat up. Before we headed out, a surprise gift from Will and Sendkit was passed around with everyone receiving a training tool, with expert demonstrations on effective ways to warm up in the outdoors.

The afternoon was spent in the Rambandit valley amongst the golden long grass, and a mantle clinic was put on with the master Alec providing a showcase of perfect technique. After some perseverance, determination and pure grit, each and every one made it up and over the lip to success. Some decided it was time to take the higher path, taking the opportunity to enjoy a Quantum classic “Left Headlight - V4” with gym-like moves leading into a slab to take you amongst the clouds.

We hope everyone had as great of a time as we had and appreciated sharing some great times with everyone. We look forward to seeing everyone at the next one, keep your eyes peeled!

Thanks to our supporter Arc’teryx Australia & New Zealand for helping to bring this event to life and supporting community initiatives centered around the outdoors.
